Elopements

Just the two of you, or the two of you and a handful of people who'd be hurt to miss it. Elopements need three things done properly — the legals, the location and the photos — and very little else.

Typical spend

$3,000 – $12,000

Celebrant and photographer are the bulk of it. Add travel, a nice dinner and flowers and most elopements still cost less than the deposit on a traditional venue.

What it looks like

Ways couples do this

Clifftop and beach

Sunrise ceremonies on the coast, permits sorted by your celebrant or planner. Weather backup matters more than anything else.

Registry plus a great dinner

Legals in the morning, then a table for eight somewhere you actually want to eat.

Travel elopements

Dolomites, Amalfi, Santorini or a New Zealand alpine valley — a photographer who knows the location is worth more than any styling.

Worth knowing

Before you book anything

  • Australian law requires a Notice of Intended Marriage lodged at least one calendar month before the date.
  • You need two witnesses over 18 — your photographer and a passer-by both count.
  • Book the photographer first. At this size they usually double as your timing and location guide.

FAQs

Elopements — your questions

How much notice do we need to elope in Australia?

One full calendar month between lodging your Notice of Intended Marriage with your celebrant and the ceremony, up to a maximum of 18 months.

How many people can come to an elopement?

Legally you only need the celebrant and two witnesses. Most couples we match bring between zero and ten guests.

Can you help with an overseas elopement?

Yes — we match photographers and planners across Europe and New Zealand who work with Australian couples regularly, including the paperwork order.
